Cleaner air. Better health. A fairer Scotland.
SHAPE+ brings together researchers and partners across Scotland to understand how air pollution affects health and develop evidence that supports action. The Scottish researcH partnership for Air Pollution health Effects – plus (SHAPE+) connects expertise across disciplines and sectors, with a shared ambition to improve air quality, protect health and reduce inequalities.

Why air quality matters
The air we breathe affects our health throughout our lives. Air pollution contributes to preventable illness, and its effects are not shared equally. Children and people with existing health conditions can be particularly vulnerable, while disadvantaged communities often face overlapping challenges linked to pollution and poor health.
Improving air quality is an opportunity to create healthier places and reduce health inequalities across Scotland.
Turning evidence into action
SHAPE+ brings researchers together with people working in policy, regulation, healthcare and other sectors to identify pressing questions, review existing evidence and develop practical recommendations.
Through workshops, research exchange and jointly developed publications, we will connect scientific knowledge with the decisions that shape Scotland’s air quality and health.
What we are working towards
- A connected network of researchers and partners across Scotland.
- Shared priorities for air quality and health research.
- Two evidence briefs developed with stakeholders to inform policy and practice.
- A position paper identifying research challenges, gaps and opportunities.
- Opportunities for early career researchers to contribute and build collaborations.
