Shaping the questions together
SHAPE+ will develop its research priorities with stakeholders, bringing scientific expertise together with experience from policy and practice.
Our work will synthesise existing evidence by examining what research already tells us, where important gaps remain, and what this means for action in Scotland. Initial areas of interest include:
Transport and air quality
How do transport emissions affect exposure and health? What can existing evidence tell us about measures such as low-emission zones, and how their benefits are distributed?
Homes and residential emissions
How do activities such as domestic burning contribute to air pollution? What are the implications for exposure, health and approaches to reducing emissions?
Health and inequalities
How do air pollution, deprivation and poor health interact? How can research support action that protects vulnerable groups, including children, and reduces unequal health impacts?
Climate change and net zero
How can climate and net-zero policies also improve air quality and health? Where might competing priorities or unintended consequences require closer attention?
Connecting research with decisions
Across these themes, we will explore how evidence can inform Scottish air quality policy and related decisions in transport, energy, housing and public health.
